FOREWORD
The Museum of the Banat region, an impressive institution of culture and scientific research, benefitting by the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Inspectorate for Culture of the Timis County, organized at the beginning of October 1995, in Timisoara - the town lieing on the Bega-river - an International Symposium of Prehistorical Archaeology under the title "Vinca Culture - its role and cultural connections".
Organized for the first time by the Museum of the Banat region, this remarkable scientific event was honoured by the participation of more than 25 specialists, who are working directly in this field, specialists from: Germany, Italy, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Hungary and Romania. These specialists showed their discoveries done in the field of the Vinca Culture, they presented papers of a real scientifical value, bringing new data about the evolution and the role of this culture of the Middle and Late Neolithic in the ancient history of Banat and the neighbouring territories.
Thanks to the Museum of the Banat region and to the Inspectorate for Culture, these papers have been published as a mark of gratitude for those who toil in the sphere of the ancient history and of archaeology and contribute with their activities to a better understanding of our cultural heritage.
This promising beginning may be followed by other events of the same size, events that will be able to attest the far -reaching spirituality of the ancestors of our people.
