Gerince megtört. A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. They sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. Bővebb ismertető
They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearting, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other's world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

A szerzőről
Cormac McCarthy művei
A Rhode Island-i Providence-ben született, 1933-ban és 2023 júniusában halt meg Santa Fe-ben.

Tíz regényt írt (emellett számos forgatókönyvön dolgozott), melyek közül a legutolsó, Az út (The Road) 2007-ben jelent meg. Ebből a művéből John Hillcoat rendezett filmet, melyet 2009 végén mutattak be az Egyesült Államokban. 2008-ban láthatták a magyar nézők a Nem vénnek való vidék (No Country for Old Men) című regényből a Coen testvérek által készített filmadaptációt, amely négy Oscar-díjat nyert. Ugyancsak mozgókép készül a Véres délkörökből (Blood Meridian).

A Faulkner-díjat, a Nemzeti Könyv-díjat és a Pulitzer-díjat egyaránt magáénak tudó Cormac McCarthy rémálomszerű, mégis gyönyörűséges nyelvezetű, kalandos remekművét, a Véres délköröket a kritikusok a 20. századi irodalom, azon túl pedig a teljes angol nyelvű irodalom legfontosabb regényei közt tartják számon; és Poe, Melville vagy Faulkner leghíresebb alkotásaihoz hasonlítják. Harold Bloom, a neves irodalmár egyenesen a négy legjobb élő amerikai író közé sorolja a szerzőt Don DeLillo, Philip Roth és Thomas Pynchon társaságában. Elemi erejű mondatai – ahogyan egyik méltatója nevezte: ezek a „vesszőtlen konvojok” – oly híven közvetítik lidérces történeteit, akár valami visszavonhatatlan próféciát.
