About the Author
Arthur Conan Doyle was bom in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied medicine, and in 1882 opened his practice. But patients did not flock to young Dr. Doyle too quickly, and during the long months of waiting for them, he began writing.
Although Doyle's first stories were not very successful, his first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet^ was an instant success. Doyle used one of his medical school teachers. Dr. JoseplT Bell, as a model for Holmes. Bell was brilliant, not only at diagnosing the illnesses of his patients, but in studying their appearance, background, and habits to leam about them as well.
