Bővebb ismertető
Preface Review of General Psychiatry, 4th edition, is designed for medicai students—for course adoption, to supplement course syllabus materials, to complement readings in the literature, and to use as a companion text with more comprehensive works. The book originated in the extensive program of psychiatric education offered by the University of California, San Francisco. Written by psychiatric educators, this text serves the needs of medical students in most settings. In addition, it can serve as a review text for psychiatric residents and other trainees, and as a reference for physicians and other health professionals. Psychiatry is a discipline of observation and probing inquiry, a basic science of behavior, and a clinical science of mental disorder and emotional responses to physiologic change, somatic illness, and life events. Critics in neuroscience characterize psychiatry as brainless; critics within psychologic medicine fear that psychiatry will become mindless. Students everywhere are concerned that the medical curriculum not be witless. Our aim is to present psychiatry with the proper mix of brain, mind, and wit. NEW TO THIS EDITION This edition welcomes 16 new authors, many of whom are co-authors working with contributors to earlier editions of Review of General Psychiatry. The text has been updated to be consistent with the recently published Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). All of the chapters in Section III. Mental Disorders contain the diagnostic criteria as presented in DSM-IV. Diagnostic and treatment algorithms have been added to almost all of these chapters, as well. In keeping with the rapidly moving nature of the field, the chapters on "Brain & Behavior" "Neurobehavioral Chemistry & Physiology", and "Somatic Therapies" have been completely updated. Four chapters are entirely new: Psychological Testing Substance-Related Disorders Childhood Mental Disorders Emergency Psychiatry In addition, a clinical case, written from the perspective of a general internist, has been added to the chapter, "The Clinical Case Summary."
