Introduction
Symbian represents a unique proposition, in terms of its technology and its position in the world market for wireless information devices. Symbian's technology, encompassing an industrial strength operating system, a user-friendly application suite, PC-based data synchronization, and SDKs, covers the full spectrum of requirements for these devices.
This is a book by programmers, for programmers, covering the whole spectrum of Symbian development.
At the heart of Symbian's technology, EPOC is possibly the most exciting C-l-+-based system in use today. A full OS is provided, with good object-oriented design from the ground up, and a very compact implementation. Power management is built right into the kernel, so you don't need to worry about it -and neither do end-users. Memory management, efficient event handling, files and documents, graphics and windowing, and many communications protocols are all provided through native C+-I- APIs. For porting standard C programs, a compatibility layer calls through to the native C-H- code.
Professional Symbian Programming ^vowiAes all you need to know to get started with EPOC programming, using Symbian's SDKs included in the book's CD-ROM, along with a suite of examples that have been developed specially for the book.
The chapters in the body of the book are organized into four major sections:
? Introducing EPOC: from Chapter 2 to Chapter 8, I introduce the main development tools and the really fundamental ideas you'll need in order to understand EPOC. Whatever your interest in EPOC, you'll need to read these chapters first.
