In The Beginning
The interior of the sleeping North American continent was most easily reached in the 17th century by an ancient aboriginal "Highway" - the Ottawa River, the Mighty Kitchisppi, river of the Algonquin. The river irresistibly beckoned European explorers, fur traders and missionaries along its 1280 kilometres (800 miles) from the St. Lawrence River, along the Ottawa and then via Lake Huron to the abundance of the Mississippi Valley, the vast plains of the north west and the rich potential of the Arctic and Pacific oceans.
