INTRODUCTION It is not easy to define a wildflower; what one person considers a wildflower may be a weed to another. All we may safely say is that they are wild plants with flowers and that they may be found almost anywhere, from cracks in city sidewalks to vast empty deserts, pristine forests, or mountain meadows. This guide is directed toward the reader whose interest in wildflowers has just been awakened, as well as toward the nature devotee who knows many of the common or showy western wildflowers but desires to learn more. Because space in a book is necessarily limited, only a portion of the thousands of western wildflowers can be discussed or illustrated. Our plan, therefore, is to cover most of the flowers that attract attention because they are showy or because of their unusual nature, to represent with at least one example most genera of western wildflowers, and to represent the kind of variation found among species of some of the huge western genera such as Lupines, Beardtongues, and Evening Primroses.
