GENERAL EDITOR'S PREFACE The major aim of this series on the Modern Aspects of Chemistry is the presentation of the results of recent developments in the major branches of chemistry in the form of general surveys suitable for the graduate student. It is hoped that these will fulfil the need of chemists, both research workers and teachers, in keeping abreast with the modern trends in those aspects of chemistry in which the reader is not necessarily a specialist; as a whole they will be representative of the entire field of chemistry. Each volume will comprise a survey of modern aspects of the subject of its title and in each it is assumed that the reader is familiar with that fundamental background which is adequately provided in current textbooks for degree purposes. The broad treatment that is adopted, it is believed, distinguishes the present volumes from a series of monographs; at the same time the presentation departs from that employed in the compilation of review articles which are normally designed for the more specialist reader. It is hoped that these Modern Aspects volumes will, therefore, be a valuable supplement to the standard advanced text-books in which the latest results are not included because of the rapid developments in the subject.
