PRAEFATIO PREFACE Hoc lexico omnia verba Latina in provinciis Pannoniis relicta voluimus contineri. Hic tomus primus verba communia, verba breviter scripta (sine quaerendo, possintne solvi annon), eas partes textuum solutione egentes, quae verba integra videntur, et omnia nomina propria exceptis virorum feminarumque mortalium comprehendit. Inter lemmata inveniuntur etiam verba non Latina inscriptionum Romanarum aut Romanas imitantium (cf. lemmata 'RAQOF' aut 'ASA|MO| NEM|M['), nulla tamen Graecis Tuscisve litteris scripta. Fragmenta, quae identificari nequirent, a nobis collecta non sunt. In generibus variis inscriptionum colligendis iam erant nobis severiora adhibenda praecepta. Praeceptum nostrum generale supra expositum totum valuit in inscriptionibus lapidaribus, stilographis, generatim etiam in tegularum sigillis (v. ül 2). Contra sigilla argillaria, quippe quarum pars maior non Pannonicae originis esset, non sunt a nobis recepta. E quibus tamen assumpsimus ea, quae utpote in argillis patriis impressa procul dubio patria haberi possunt (quod fit tum, cum ipsum sigillum habemus). Hac de causa non sunt collecta diplomata militaria, quippe quae ut descripta et recognita ex tabula aenea non proprie ad Pannoniam This vocabulary contains, according to our purpose, all the Latin words testated in the Román provinces of the Pannoniae. This first volume comprises the common words, the abbreviations (disregarding whether they can be solved or not), such unsolvable parts of the texts, which seem to be words, and all proper names save those of men and women. We have included even those non-Latin words that can be found in the Román or Romanized inscriptions (cf. the entries 'RAQOF' or 'ASA|MO|NEM|M['), but for those written with Greek or Etruscan letters. The fragments unable to be identified have not been collected. In collecting the different kinds of inscriptions we had to adhere to somé stricter rules. Our generál rule described above has been totally applied to stone inscriptions and graffiti, and mostly to the brick stamps (see III 2). Ceramic stamps, however, beeing mostly of not Pannonian origin, have not been included. We have included only those stamps that, found impressed on an inland made ware, can doubtless be regarded as inland stamps (which happens when we have the stamp negatíve itself). Although the metál or glass inscriptions and ceramic paintings are to be handled almost the same way, yet we have collected them because of their great rarity and the still greater ambiguity of their localisation. We have collected no coins, either of Pannonian or of foreign emissons. Somé groups of the material are so peculiar that should not interest us exploring the properly Pannonian word treasure. Therefore we did not collect the texts of the military diploms, because they have, being descripta et recognita ex tabula aenea, no proper connection
