Preface
Most of the papers in this volume were originally read at a conference on 21 and 22 March 1985. Some of the themes aired at the conference had already been discussed in a series of seminars which ran from January to early March 1985. These seminars threw up many points and led to more papers being commissioned in order to attempt a fuller appraisal of the many-faceted aspects of the Khrushchev era.
Cordial thanks are extended to the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, especially to its Director, Professor M. A. Branch, and Philip Robinson, for all their help and encouragement.
Warm thanks are also due to the Ford Foundation and the Nuffield Foundation, without whose generous financial aid the conference could not have taken place.
