This book is dedicated with love to my wife Marjorie Jean. She was part of JENNIE, from the very inception of the idea. She spent countless hours deciphering the almost-illegible handwriting of hundreds of Jennie's letters, collected from dozens of sources. She spent uncounted weeks in the library of the British Museum searching out varied references in magazines, books, manuscripts. She accompanied me on many of my interviews, remembering things that my tape recorder had not caught and my eyes had overlooked. She examined each draft of the manuscripts of both volumes, commenting on them in great detail with excellent criticism and expert editing. She is therefore truly a deep part of both volumes. Were it not for her, the work would have taken much more then seven years. But, above all, these books are buoyed with her spirit, as I am.
