Agenda 2000-The vision of social psychology The rise of social psychology is closely associated with the 20th century. Both in Europe and North America, our field has experienced a tremendous success as a basic science and as the foundation of many applied psychological disciplines. We have gained enormous insights into the dynamics of social behaviour, which includes people's thinking and feeling in both their conscious and unconscious components. At the end of this century, it is time to reflect about where we are and where we shall go. We have set this task on the agenda of the year-2000 volume of the European Journal of Social Psychology and solicited articles from six eminent scholars. Rather than asking them to reminisce about the past, we have invited them to share their views of the theoretical and empirical goals in the future for their own domain of expertise. We trust that these contributions will inspire növel research and advance theory in social psychology. Instead of editing a single special issue, we have decided to use an innovative formát. In particular, the invited papers will be spread across the entire year and serve as the lead articles for each issue. Thus, the entire volume, which will alsó appear in a new cover, is partly devoted to the future perspective of social psychology and the intellectual vision that it has to offer. The contributions are: E. Tory Higgins Social cognition: Learning about what matters in the social world Norbert Schwarz Social judgements and attitudes: Warmer, more social, and less conscious John Turner Social influence: Building a unified field Susan Fiske Stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination: Evolution, culture, mind, and brain John Holmes Social relationships: The nature and function of relational schemas Gun Sémin Communication: Language as an implementational device for cognition Rupert Brown Social idenity theory: Past achievements, current problems, and future challenges CCC 0046-2772/2000/010001 -01 $ 17.50 Copyright 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
