PREDGOVOR U toku izrade ovog reőnika smrt je ugrabila profesora Vladetu Popoviéa, jednog od saradnika na ovom delu; iscrpen strahotama rata, pre vremena je napiistio krug Srba radnika na jugoslovenskoj knjizi. On nije dovrsio na sebe űzeti deo ovoga recíiika. Vladeta Popovié izradio je slova: b, d, slovo e do eo-, i jedan deo slova m. Slovo m su dovrsile: Marija Stansfild Popovié, Emilija Kuzmanovié, Olga Marjanovié i Dra-gica Pervaz. Svetomir Ristié Zivojin Simié PREFACE The need for a comprehensive Enghsh—Serbo-Croatian dictionary has long been felt, and it is the aim of the present work to meet it. This dictionary is the largest of its kind — i.e. from a foreign language into Serbo-Croatian — so far written. We hope that it will contribute to the broadening of the cultural relations between Yugoslavia and the English-speaking countries. This dictionary has been the work of many years. Professor Vladeta Popovic of Belgrade University worked on it till his death in 1951. His premature death has deprived Yugoslav culture of an able worker. Professor Popovié did not complete his part of the dictionary; he finished the letters: b, d, letter e to eo-, and a part of letter m. The letter m has been completed by the following members of the staff of the Department of English Language and Literature in the University of Belgrade: Mary Stansfield Popovic, M.A. (Cantab), Emilija Kuzmanovié. Olga Mar janovic and Dragica Pervaz. Professor Svetomir Ristic has written the following letters: letter e from eo- to the end, and letters g, h, i, 1, n, o, p, q, r, s. In writing letters 1 and s professor Ristic was assisted by professor Milorad Vanlic. Zivojin Simié, B.A., has written the following letters: a, c, f, j, k, t, u, v, w, x, y, %. Colonel Ivan Mirkovié has contributed much to the military terminology of this dictionary. But although several collaborators have worked on this dictionary, the responsibility for its text as a whole is jointly shared by Svetomir Ristic and Zivojin Simié. Whatever the omissions or faults of this dictionary, the authors appeal to its readers, to use it critically, reporting any errors they may notice, — for some errors are inevitable, — and we can only say, as Dr. Johnson did, that »Dictionaries are like watches, the worst is better than none, and the best cannot be expected to go quite true. « The pronunciation of English words is indicated by means of the symbols adopted by the Association Phonétique internationale (see. key, p. IX), except that the symbols s, c, 2 and dz, have been substituted for the international symbols J", tj, 3 and ds. The sign: indicates that the preceding vowel is long. The sign ' indicates that the following syllable has a strong stress, and the sign • indicates that the following syllable has secondary stress. Yugoslav peoples use two alphabets: the Cyrillic and the Latin; both have been given together with the sound value of each letter on pp. X and XI. Where necessary, Serbo-Croatian words have been accented, using the four Serbo-Croatian accentuation signs: the long rising accent is indicated by the sign''over the vowel, the long falling accent by the sign the short rising accent by ^ and the short falling accent by . The sign over the vowel indicates that the syllable is long. In writing this dictionary, we have used, among others, the following works: The Oxford Enghsh Dictionary, Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language, The Shorter Oxford Dictionary, The Universal Dictionary of the English Language by Henry Cecil Wyld, The Concise Oxford Dictionary, An English Pronouncing Dictionary by Daniel Jones, and Srpski Rjecnik by Vuk Stefanovié Karadzié. Our thanks are due to the Serbian Publishing House »Prosveta« for publishing this comprehensive dictionary. February, 1955. Svetomir Ristic Belgrade. Zivojin Simic
