INTRODUCTION There has been great need in materials which provide guided discussion for students of Russian. „Davajte obsudim" is a product of this need and has been written especially for intermediate level students of Russian; either secondary school pupils or university students. This book consists of 12 chapters built on one and the same principle. It provides a framework through which the teacher can introduce a topic, clarify the issues involved and stimulate a discussion. Each chapter begins with preparatory exercises. While doing them, you will meet many of the words and phrases which will help you to read subsequent texts. The focal point in each chapter is naturally the topic which follows the exercises previously described. The style of its presentation varies from chapter to chapter. There are dialogs, picture stories, jokes, adapted works by Russian writers, stories with simple plots and so forth. Ali of them deal with vitai issues. The exercises following the „texts" are designed to guide the students from a highly controlled discussion to an open-ended discussion of the topics suggested. Comprehension The purpose of these exercises is to ensure that the meaning of the text has been fully established in the students' minds. Vocabulary Here the most important words and lexical constructions of the text are practised. Reasoning exercises In answering the questions, thinking about the text once again' and reasoning together, you will go deeper into the text. Let's discuss This section is built as „For and Against" by L.G. Alexander. Students are asked direct questions intended to get them to talk about how they personally feel about the arguments presented. These questions provide the basis for extensive oral work.
