Preface
The patients presented in this collection are representative of those seen in the Oral Medicine clinic and (naturally) predominantly demonstrate lesions of the oral mucosa. However, in such a clinic a wide range of patients is seen and so a number of conditions are included which might be reasonably classified under the heading of 'Oral Surgery' if a pedantic attitude were adopted. Oral medicine is a discipline which is essentially diagnostic and depends to a great extent upon the various investigative procedures following initial clinical examination. None the less, the initial provisional clinical diagnosis based upon observation and careful history-taking remains the most important single factor in the investigation of a patient.
The questions (and answers) reflect this view -most of the answers are arranged to emphasise the significance of full investigation on the future management of the patient. It is strongly recommended that the reader's own answers should be written down in brief note form before the answers given in the text are consulted - it is all too easy to assume, after turning to the printed answer, a more complete response in oneself than in fact occurred. The cases are presented in completely random order with no attempt at gradation.
The majority of the patients illustrated have been referred to and seen by the author in his clinics. Professor John Lemmer and Dr T.W. Stewart have kindly allowed the use of illustrations of their patients.
