PREFACE
The aim of the present monograph has been to provide a comprehensive and detailed review of the problems that have arisen in the course of research on aldosterone, the most important mineralocorticoid hormone of the adrenal cortex. Seventeen years after the discovery of aldosterone our knowledge is still incomplete both as regards physiological roles and clinical implications, and therefore it is obvious that the opinions quoted are frequently conflicting. The authors have attempted to adopt, whenever possible, a balanced standpoint, indicating, at the same time, the questions which are still unsolved. This general principle has been observed not only while discussing various theoretical and practical problems, but particularly when dealing with our own experimental results. We hope that the present monograph will be of help to those who work in this increasingly important field of medical research.
Our grateful acknowledgements are due to all our colleagues who have taken interest in our work and gave us valuable support,. Firstly, we are indebted to Professor P.
